When was the Coin First Minted?

Coinage was introduced to Australia in 1810 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie as an emergency measure following a shortage of Spanish dollars. Australian Silver Coins were minted from Spanish dollars (50% silver) obtained from Hong Kong. Australia's first pure Silver coin was the Holey Dollar, issued in New South Wales in 1813. 

Who Designed the Coin?

 In 1910, the Australia Silver Coins were struck by the Royal Mint in London. Designed by George W. DeSaulles, it featured a portrait of King Edward VII on the obverse and an Australian coat of arms on the reverse. The coat of arms was designed by Sydney artist and sculptor William Edgar Bertram in 1908. The British government accepted the design in 1909 for use on the coins of all British colonies.

Change Between the years 1960 and 2000

 In 1966, the Royal Australian Mint was established, and the first coin it minted was the 1966 round silver 50-cent piece. Since then, the mint has struck and issued many silver coins. In 1970, the Australian dollar replaced the Australian pound, used since 1910. The first commemorative coins were issued in 1970 to celebrate both the 100th anniversary of Australia's parliament and the 50th anniversary of coinage in Australia. 

In 1984, new designs for denominations 5 cents and above were introduced. The 5-cent coin became dodecagonal or 12-sided. And the 20-cent coin became dodecagonal as well in 1991. The 2 dollar coin was introduced in 1988 to replace paper notes of that denomination; its design has remained unchanged since then.

Change Between the years 2001 and 2022

 In 2010, the Perth Mint in Western Australia produced its first silver bullion coin with .9999 fine silver, the Australian Silver Kookaburra. The Silver Kookaburra was an extension of its popular Gold Kookaburra bullion coin. And it featured a new reverse design each year.
